Celebrating courage in the current battle against tyranny is in itself a tricky business. In our 2004 premier presentation on this Web site, we commended Keith Olbermann, MSNBC host of Countdown, for presenting commentary and news of dissent that usually received little press coverage.

When most TV personalities were unapologetic flatterers of the Bush junta, it was encouraging to see someone like Keith providing a forum for such progressive voices as Joe Wilson, Cindy Sheehan, Michael Schiavo, John Dean, Greg Palast, and many others. Unfortunately, Olbermann sometimes got somewhat taken in by Republican scams such as the Heather Wilson fiasco. Keith interviewed her because she and others were making it appear that she was bucking Bush's domestic spying.

On the negative side, Olbermann gave too much time to Countdown's lighter side: Oddball, Worst Persons, etc. He also assumed that his viewers were as adolescently addicted to baseball and football as he was. And his attempt at humor by hosting Richard Lewis and other non-comics was a complete bust.

But we can't forget that Keith was the only person on national TV who had the guts to mention the distinct possibility of vote fraud in 2004. Peter Coyote of black box voting made it clear that Olbermann's discussion of such a taboo subject almost cost Keith his job. The Rove Gestapo retribution against genuine dissent is real! Keith's "commentaries" are right on target, though they tend to be repetitious and too long.

Unfortunately, during the 2008 election campaign, Olbermann became a compleat partisan for Barack Obama and thus forfeited the objectivity so essential for a news person. Because of his bias, Keith wasn't able or willing to criticize Obama when he revealed himself to be just as reactionary as McCain. And Olbermann has continued to support Obama when it has become undeniably clear that he is a puppet of the cabal and is continuing the same fascist policies as Bush II.

Courage in the struggle against the tyranny of the Bush junta occurs in response to specific outrages they perpetrate. It's instructive that just as we initiated this salute to true courage, the Republicans launched a fake pretense of courage. Heather Wilson presented herself as a brave warrior for American Constitutional rights, when she's merely a co-conspirator in a Republican swindle. Fortunately, we can salute these acts of true courage in exposing Wilson and the entire Republican scam:

If we're going to celebrate genuine heroes in the battle against present tyranny, we're going to have to keep our knees loose.
